The Life of Alulu

The Story Needed More Than A Cover.

The Life of Alulu was developed as more than a memoir. The goal was to build a complete author brand and publishing system that could honor the weight of the story while supporting promotion, credibility, and long-term visibility.

I led the visual direction across the identity, book cover exploration, author positioning, marketing touchpoints, and digital experience concepts. The work was designed to create a cohesive world around the book rather than treating the cover as a standalone asset.

A Brand Rooted In Legacy.

The visual identity centered on themes of purpose, legacy, leadership, and endurance. I developed a refined brand system that balanced elegance with emotional depth, using a rich editorial palette, elevated typography, and symbolic elements that could carry across publishing, presentation, and promotional materials.

The result was a system that felt timeless, distinguished, and personal — appropriate for both the memoir itself and the broader author platform surrounding it.

Multiple Cover Directions, One Cohesive Vision.

I created multiple book cover concepts to explore different emotional and visual entry points into the story. Each direction approached the memoir from a slightly different lens while staying connected to the same brand foundation.

These concepts helped establish a visual range for the project — from more classic and editorial approaches to more symbolic and narrative-driven compositions — while keeping the identity recognizable and unified.

Built To Support The Author Platform.

Beyond the book itself, I developed supporting brand and marketing materials intended to help the project live across author communications, publishing collateral, and promotional touchpoints. This included brand applications, presentation-ready materials, and a broader system for extending the story into a recognizable public-facing presence.

I also designed web and responsive UX/UI concepts for desktop, tablet, and mobile, shaping how the author platform could present the memoir, the author, and the surrounding story ecosystem in a polished, modern way.

A Publishing System, Not Just A Design Exercise.

This project was ultimately about building a strong foundation for both the memoir and the author behind it. The identity system, cover directions, and digital concepts were all created to work together as one cohesive brand experience — one capable of supporting launch, promotion, and long-term recognition.

Learning The System Before Designing For It.

SEUNwater was built around a complicated problem: making water infrastructure more proactive instead of waiting for something to fail.

The early system focused on using IoT technology to continuously monitor water conditions across large facilities and infrastructure systems. Depending on the use case, that meant understanding measurements such as water quality, pressure, flow, temperature, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and other sensor data — then figuring out how that information could become useful to the people responsible for maintaining the system.

I did not approach this as a surface-level technology brand.

I went deep into the subject matter so I could help shape the product and communicate it responsibly.

Research Became Part Of The Job.

My research stretched across hospital infrastructure, HVAC and closed-loop water systems, municipal water utilities, nitrate and arsenic monitoring, water loss, sensors, IoT, data systems, and global water-management challenges.

I studied how different organizations monitored water, where manual testing created gaps, what small municipalities were working with compared with larger utilities, and how the product might need to adapt across very different environments. Later work explored continuous monitoring of quality, pressure, and flow, including specific use cases around dangerous nitrate levels and other water-quality concerns.

The research also expanded far beyond one region. I was looking at municipalities, infrastructure programs, hospitals, water operators, and potential applications across the United States and international markets.

The more technical the project became, the more important translation became.

Product, Engineering And Experience Had To Connect.

My role touched the product itself, not just how it was presented.

I worked across design direction, engineering support, project management, UX, product definition, technical documentation, research, website development, presentations, manuals, video, and brand communication.

One of the early team decks literally listed my role as Design Director, Engineer, Project Manager.

That work meant understanding how sensors, probes, power, hardware, and software fit together well enough to make informed decisions around the physical system and the experience around it. Early product development included components for conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, Raspberry Pi and Arduino-based hardware, calibration systems, and supporting circuitry.

I worked closely with the technical team rather than pretending design and engineering were separate worlds. My job was often to connect what the system measured, why it mattered, who needed the information, and how that information should be experienced and explained.

Making Infrastructure Understandable.

SEUNwater had to make sense to very different audiences.

A water operator needed to understand monitoring and response.

A hospital or facility needed to understand risk and infrastructure.

A municipality needed to understand affordability and continuous surveillance.

An investor needed to understand the market, product, scalability, and business model.

A technical partner needed enough specificity to understand how the system actually worked.

So I built communication systems around the technology — investor presentations, product materials, manuals, diagrams, website content, visual systems, videos, and explanations that could move between highly technical detail and a much simpler business story.

That became one of the most important parts of my role: taking complicated infrastructure and making it understandable without stripping away what made it technically meaningful.

From Hospitals To Municipal Water.

The scope of SEUNwater evolved significantly over time.

Earlier work centered heavily on large facilities and hospital HVAC systems, including continuous monitoring designed to help teams identify water-condition problems before they became expensive infrastructure failures.

Later positioning expanded further into drinking-water systems and municipalities, with the product framed around continuous monitoring of water quality, pressure, flow, water loss, nitrate concerns, and utility infrastructure for communities of different sizes.

That evolution meant continuously revisiting the product story, business model, user needs, research, and materials as the opportunity became clearer.

Built Around A Very Technical Problem.

SEUNwater is one of the projects that best shows the range of what I mean when I say I work across systems.

I was not simply handed finished technology and asked to make it attractive.

I researched the problem, helped shape the product, worked alongside engineering, managed pieces of the project, built the brand and digital experience around it, created technical and investor communications, and translated a highly specialized subject for everyone from infrastructure professionals to potential partners and investors.

A significant amount of the engineering documentation, manuals, and internal presentation material cannot be shown publicly, so this portfolio includes selected non-confidential work alongside the live website and product video.

The visible work is only part of the project. The real job was understanding the system well enough to help build and explain it.

Turning Complexity Into Something People Can Use.

SEUNwater required me to move comfortably between research, engineering, design, technology, infrastructure, business, and communication.

I learned enough about an unfamiliar and highly technical world to contribute meaningfully inside it — then built the brand, digital experience, documentation, and communication systems that made that complexity easier for everyone else to understand.

Where Words Ignite Worlds

Building The Publication Around The Voices.

Where Words Ignite Worlds began as a university classroom project centered on music, social change, and the people using their voices to shape culture and community.

The students brought the stories. I built everything around them.

Working with the course and project leadership, I developed the publication from the ground up — brand identity, magazine design, editorial system, print production, digital edition, website, blog, content organization, image sourcing and curation, editing support, and the infrastructure needed to turn a collection of student work into a real public-facing publication.

The inaugural issue grew into a 34-page magazine across five sections, supported by a dedicated website and digital reading experience.

One Story System Across Print And Digital.

The challenge wasn’t simply designing individual pages.

The magazine needed to feel cohesive even though the stories came from different student writers, covered different subjects, and moved between academic analysis, interviews, music, culture, community, and social change.

I created the visual and editorial system that connected them.

That meant establishing the brand, typography, layouts, hierarchy, cover direction, recurring section structures, image treatment, pacing, and overall visual rhythm of the issue — then carrying that same identity into the website, e-magazine, and blog.

The goal was for someone to encounter the project in print or online and immediately feel like they had entered the same world.

Editing Without Erasing The Writer.

Because the articles were student-authored, my role wasn’t to replace their voices.

I worked around those voices — organizing content, editing for presentation and readability, curating photography and supporting imagery, building hierarchy, and creating enough consistency that the publication felt professionally produced without making every writer sound like the same person.

That balance mattered.

The finished work needed to feel polished while still belonging to the students who created the stories.

From Class Project To Public Platform.

The project originated in the Spring 2024 IUPUI/IUI course “Rhythm & Revolution: Music and Social Change” and grew into an independent publication designed to continue beyond the classroom. The live platform includes the magazine, a blog, contribution pathways, and an invitation for future writers and community voices to participate.

What started as coursework became something people could actually hold, read, share, revisit, and contribute to.

That required thinking beyond the initial issue.

I wasn’t just designing a magazine. I was building the brand and publishing framework that could support what came next.

Where Words Ignite Worlds became a complete publishing experience spanning brand, editorial design, print, digital publishing, web, blog, content curation, photography direction, editing, and production.

The students wrote the stories.

My job was to make sure those stories had a world worthy of them.

The Fancho

From Idea To Launch-Ready Venture

The Fancho started as an entrepreneur with an idea, an early logo, and a product concept that was much bigger than either of them.

The product was a smart wearable poncho designed for sports and live entertainment: water-resistant, built with three independently controlled heating zones, and supported by a companion app. What began as a branding project quickly expanded into helping figure out what the entire venture needed to become.

I worked alongside my longtime creative partner across the brand, product, digital experience, business model, investor story, sports outreach, and launch preparation.

One Product. Two Very Different Markets.

I started by researching sports and entertainment, live-event culture, fan behavior, wearable technology, competing products, merchandising, and where there was actually room in the market for something new.

The business had two distinct paths.

On the D2C side, The Fancho needed to work as its own consumer brand — something a fan could discover, understand, purchase, and use.

On the B2B side, the same underlying product could be white-labeled for collegiate and professional sports organizations, customized in team colors and branding, and sold as official merchandise.

That meant I wasn’t designing for one customer journey. I was communicating with fans, sports organizations, investors, stakeholders, and technical partners — each of whom needed to understand the same idea from a completely different entry point.

Building The Thing, Not Just Dressing It.

My role reached far beyond visual identity.

I worked across brand strategy, creative direction, product design and development, UX, app thinking, landing-page design, investor presentations, stakeholder communication, B2B outreach, marketing, technical documentation, partnership development, and launch strategy.

On the product side, I was thinking about how someone would actually wear it: where the heating zones belonged, how the controls needed to function, how the materials behaved, how someone moved in it, and how the physical product connected back to the app and overall customer experience.

That work also meant understanding the less glamorous details behind what we could responsibly communicate.

One memorable lesson: you cannot casually call something waterproof because it sounds better. The product was water-resistant, so that is what we said.

Small detail, bigger principle: marketing still has to survive contact with reality.

Built For Launch. Limited By Capital.

By the end, The Fancho had evolved from an early idea into a launch-ready sports-tech product and brand with a defined physical experience, consumer identity, companion-app thinking, D2C strategy, B2B white-label model, investor materials, sports outreach, and launch preparation.

We were preparing for a February launch when the founder was ultimately unable to secure the remaining capital needed to launch and sustainably operate the company.

The venture did not make it to market, but the work reached the point it was supposed to reach.

We took an idea, figured out what it needed to become, built the product and brand around it, developed two distinct go-to-market stories, and brought the entire ecosystem to a launch-ready state.

Built To Become Something Real.

The Fancho is one of my clearest examples of working comfortably inside ambiguity — moving between product, technology, brand, business, and audience without treating any of them like separate problems.

The final system was designed to work for the fan wearing it, the organization considering it as merchandise, the investor evaluating the opportunity, and the technical partners responsible for helping make it real.

Miller Family Dentistry

A New Chapter. Not a Blank Slate.

Miller Family Dentistry was moving forward with an established history and community trust worth keeping. The challenge was to make the practice distinctly Miller without leaving that familiarity behind.

I touched nearly every part of the brand ecosystem—from the strategy underneath it to the systems keeping it running after launch. This wasn’t just about changing how the practice looked. It was about connecting how it presented itself, communicated, and welcomed patients.

Where Comfort Meets Confidence.

I started by examining the local landscape: competing practices, patient expectations, search visibility, and the visual and verbal patterns that kept repeating.

The direction came down to a balance: clinical expertise without coldness, warmth without losing credibility. “Where Comfort Meets Confidence” became both the tagline and the standard behind the design.

I developed the logo family, color palette, typography, photography direction, and brand voice, then carried that identity into signage, stationery, appointment cards, and social content.

For the website, I handled structure, design, development, and copywriting. Dedicated service pages, doctor biographies, clear navigation, and visible next steps were designed to help patients understand their options without wading through clinical jargon. SEO was built into the structure rather than added afterward.

Beyond the Visible Design.

The work also included the less photogenic essentials: hosting, domain configuration, email authentication, security, backups, and uptime monitoring.

And the brand needed to work without me standing behind it. I created guidelines, a Canva Brand Kit, editable templates, social strategies, and training documentation so the team had a practical way to keep using what we built.

Together, the work formed one connected system, designed to make Miller feel like the same practice from the first Google search to the front door to the dental chair.

Miller Family Dentistry became more than a new identity or website. The final system connected strategy, design, digital experience, marketing, infrastructure, and staff tools into one brand the practice could actually carry forward.
